A report from consultation analysists The Campaign Company looks at responses from more than 5,000 people to the Healthcare for the Future consultation on services across west, north and east Cumbria

Unexplained change of mind by ambulance service. Maternity services it considered unsafe on 19 December are now thought to be safe. Why?

On 19 December 2016 North West Ambulance Service said it was unsafe to transfer women in difficult labour from Whitehaven to Carlisle.  On 8 February 2017 they announced that they were "assured it would be safe" but gave no reasons for their change of mind.  Hard not to think that pressure has been applied.  

Jan den Bak hits back as maternity row continues

Jan den Bak, of the West Cumbrians' Voice for Healthcare group, believes alternative ideas that could make consultant-led maternity services in Whitehaven sustainable have not been fully explored.

He is now appealing to bosses to start listening to genuine safety concerns, saying it is not too late to find a better way.

The Health Scrutiny committee refers the proposals to the Secretary of State for Health (now Jeremy Hunt) who can go to the Independent Reconfiguration Panel  for advice.  The Panel has in the past recommended that consultant-led maternity and other services be kept when the distance to another hospital puts mothers and babies at risk.
